The International Fisheries Day, which falls on November 21, each year, is held very successfully by the Ministry of Fisheries every year with the participation of the Sri Lankan community. The theme of the Fisheries day for this year is “Highlighting the critical importance of healthy ecosystems & to ensure sustainable fish stocks in the world".
Minister of Fisheries, Douglas Devananda said that Sri Lanka's ornamental fish industry is a valuable industry that brings foreign exchange to the country and no matter how deep the economic crisis the country is facing, he will take steps to draw the attention of the President and support it in a big way in the future. He said this while opening the largest-ever ornamental fish exhibition and market in Sri Lanka held at Taprobane Hall in Borella on 07.10.2023.
A special discussion regarding the allocation of land for a shrimp farm project proposed to be built at Hatagala area in Hungama of Hambantota district was held at the Ministry of Fisheries on 05.10.2023 under the chairmanship of Mr. Douglas Devananda, Minister of Fisheries.
