Three massive development projects aimed at economic and infrastructure development in the Jaffna district were inaugurated on 18.09.2025 under the patronage of the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Hon. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, and the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Hon. Bimal Ratnayake.
The Northern Provincial Governor, Hon. N. Vedhanayagan, Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries, Dr. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, Jaffna District Parliamentarians of the National People's Power Party and a group of senior officials of the relevant ministries were also participated for this occasion.
The following major projects were initiated under this program:
Cey-Nor Karainagar Boatyard: In order to address the severe hardships faced by the fishing community in the North due to its long-term dormancy, the modernization of this yard was initiated with the assistance of the Government of India at a cost of Rs. 330 million.
Renovation of the Colombothurai Jetty: Renovation of the Colombothurai Jetty at a cost of Rs. 140 million for the convenience of the fishing community in the area.
Development of the Udayapuram Road: Renovation of the Jaffna-Udayapuram Road at a cost of Rs. 65 million, upgrading transport facilities in the area.
Addressing the function, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar stated that:
"While developing the country, we are taking special steps to build the Jaffna district. These projects will create permanent sources of income for the residents of this area. We have initiated providing basic amenities required to the lives of the people, especially in the underdeveloped areas of the Jaffna district. While developing the fishing ports and ferries, we always give priority to solve the problems of the people."
The government expects this integrated development program will create a new awakening in the fisheries, transport and economic sectors of the Jaffna district.
