Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar takes steps to strengthen the livelihoods of Northern fishing communities

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) organized a ceremony to present recommendation letters for one-acre sea cucumber farming projects at the (Kayts) Divisional Secretariat Auditorium in Jaffna.

The Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekar, attended the event as the Chief Guest and presented the recommendation letters to the beneficiaries.

Under the programme, 120 beneficiaries representing 20 producer groups (six members in each group) received recommendation letters for initial site approval. This will enable them to obtain the Aquaculture Management Licence, the mandatory authorization required to commence commercial sea cucumber farming operations.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar emphasized that sea cucumber farming is a sustainable and high-value livelihood opportunity for coastal communities. He noted that the sector has significant potential to strengthen Sri Lanka’s Blue Economy, increase export earnings, and generate valuable foreign exchange for the country.

The Minister further stated that the Ministry remains committed to expanding community-based aquaculture programmes across the country to strengthen rural economies, create new employment opportunities, and improve the livelihoods of fishing communities.

The event was attended by NAQDA Chairman Kitsiri Dharmapriya, (Kayts) Divisional Secretary Mrs. Vanaja Selvaratnam, NAQDA Northern Province Assistant Director P. Nirubaraj, representatives of fisheries societies, officials of the Ministry and NAQDA, members of the producer groups, and other invited guests.
