The Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources has decided to launch an extensive, joint program to curb illegal fishing, which has become a serious threat to the ocean resources of Sri Lanka and the sustainability of the fishing industry.

Taking a decisive step towards resolving the infrastructure problems faced by the fishing community in the Northern and Eastern provinces, the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Hon. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, said that, Cabinet of Ministers has approved a provision of Rs. 1127.5 million for the improvement of the Valachchenai Fishery Harbour.

A special workshop was held in Ampara yesterday (19th of August, 2025) to mark the successful completion of the “Technical Cooperation Project” implemented to enhance the aquaculture sector in Ampara district under the financial contribution of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
