Launch of a "Simulator-Based" Training Program to Create a New Generation of Skilled Fisheries Labour Force!
An inaugural training program—part of an initiative to train selected youths from various districts as skilled fisheries labour force —was successfully launched recently with the participation of 20 young individuals.
As the demand for trained and skilled fishermen in Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector continues to rise, the program aims to attract the younger generation to the field and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills regarding longline fishing methods, safety protocols, and responsible fishing practices.
Designed as a residential program, the training includes three days of theoretical instruction and two days of simulator-based training. The theoretical training aims to impart knowledge on key aspects of the field, including laws and regulations governing fishing operations, deep-sea and high-seas fishing activities, vessel operations and safety, the use of fishing gear, fish handling and quality maintenance, marine weather conditions, and the prevention of ocean pollution and environmental conservation.
Furthermore, simulator-based training will provide practical insights into vessel operation, safety protocols, teamwork, and making correct decisions during emergencies by replicating various conditions encountered in real marine environments. This training will enhance the trainees’ technical understanding and preparedness prior to going out to sea.
This program seeks not only to equip selected youth with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to enter the fisheries sector but also to cultivate a new generation capable of contributing to a responsible, safe, and sustainable fishing industry.
This training program is intended to be implemented continuously at the district level; it aims to address the shortage of skilled labor in the fisheries sector and create new local and international employment and career opportunities for the youth.
This inaugural Simulator Based training programme commenced under the patronage of Mr. Susanta Kahawatta, Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, with the participation of officials including Ms. Sonja Belete, Regional Director for South Asia, representing DVV International, an organization affiliated with the German Government that provides financial and other support for the programme, as well as a group of officials representing the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
