The Department of Meteorology has forecast that seas around the island, particularly west of the island, may become extremely rough due to adverse weather conditions and increased wind speeds from the night of 31 July 2026.

In view of this high-risk situation, Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Mr. Susantha Kahawatte, has issued an emergency safety advisory to the entire fishing community.

Accordingly, small and one-day fishing vessels operating in the coastal waters of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Puttalam, Chilaw, Negombo, Colombo and Kalutara (up to Beruwala) are advised not to venture out to sea until further notice.

The Director General emphasized that wind speeds in these areas may reach up to 70 kilometres per hour, while rough seas and high waves pose a serious threat to small vessels.

Commenting further, Mr. Susantha Kahawatte said:

“As coastal waters are expected to become extremely rough due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions, this decision has been taken to safeguard the lives of fishermen. I request any small or one-day fishing vessels already at sea to return safely to shore as soon as possible. As wind speeds are expected to increase further during the night, I strongly urge all fishermen not to take unnecessary risks under any circumstances.”

The Department further advises the public to remain alert to future announcements issued by the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Meteorology and to act responsibly to safeguard lives and property.
