According to the latest advisory issued by the Department of Meteorology, increased wind speeds and rough sea conditions are expected around the island. In response, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has issued a series of special safety instructions with immediate effect to protect the fishing community.

Explaining the situation, Director General Mr. Susantha Kahawatte stated that wind speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour have been forecast in the sea areas from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar, as well as from Hambantota to Pottuvil. As a result, small fishing vessels and traditional boats operating near the coast are prohibited from sailing until further notice. Any vessels currently at sea are instructed to return safely to shore immediately.

Wearing of Life Jackets and Technical Fitness Checks:

The wearing of life jackets is mandatory from the time of departure for fishing until returning safely to shore. As many recent accidents at sea have resulted from technical failures, vessel owners are urged to ensure that engines, mechanical systems and fuel supplies are thoroughly inspected before departure and that only technically sound vessels are sent to sea.

Fishermen operating in other sea areas around the island (from Kalpitiya to Colombo and from Galle to Hambantota) are also advised to carefully assess prevailing sea conditions and engage in fishing activities only when it is safe to do so.

The Department urges the entire fishing community to remain attentive to official announcements issued by the Department of Meteorology and the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and to act responsibly during any emergency situation
