The Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Mr. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, conducted a field inspection and held an extensive discussion with representatives of fishermen’s associations regarding the establishment of a fishing landing site in the Senanayake Samudraya area, a long-standing request of fishermen in the Monaragala District.

Senior officials and technical experts from the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) and the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) also participated in the discussion and provided scientific explanations regarding the environmental conditions and fishery resources in the relevant area.

The representatives of the fishermen’s associations pointed out the challenges they have faced for many years due to transportation difficulties, lack of access facilities for fishing activities and the absence of a fishing landing site. They once again requested that a fish landing site be constructed at a suitable location in the Senanayake Samudraya area as a permanent solution to these issues.

Thereafter, technical officers pointed out that Senanayake Samudraya is an important biological area where several indigenous fish species breed and fish fry grow. They also stated that scientific assessments have indicated a risk of damage to fish resources if a permanent fishing landing site is established in the area or if extensive fishing activities are permitted.

The officials further emphasised that it is extremely important to protect the natural balance of Senanayake Samudraya, one of the largest reservoirs in Sri Lanka, and to safeguard the survival of aquatic life. They stressed that only through the sustainable protection of fish resources can the benefits of the fishing industry be ensured for future generations as well.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar stated that the Government fully understands that the fishermen’s request is a legitimate issue that has existed for many years.

“This is not an ordinary administrative issue; it is a matter that must be approached scientifically. Relevant officials have pointed out that there is a risk of damage to fish resources if a fishing landing site is constructed at the location or fishing activities are expanded. Therefore, the Government will work towards a solution that balances both the livelihoods of fishermen and the protection of fish resources,” the Minister said.

“There should be no harm caused to fish fry or breeding grounds. At the same time, the livelihoods of fishermen must also be protected. Therefore, together with the officials, we will take steps to provide the necessary facilities at another suitable alternative location, excluding environmentally sensitive areas, so that fishermen can safely engage in fishing activities,” the Minister further stated.

Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar further stated that the necessary steps would be taken to provide a practical solution that integrates all three aspects — environmental protection, the sustainability of fish resources and the welfare of fishermen — while taking into consideration the recommendations of all relevant technical institutions.
