As weather conditions around the island continue to change, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has issued an urgent notice to all fishing communities regarding safety at sea.

According to the latest forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology, wind speeds of up to 70 km/h are expected in the sea areas off Puttalam, Chilaw, Negombo, Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, and Pottuvil, with waves likely to reach heights of between 2.5 and 3 meters.

As a result, sea travel has been temporarily prohibited, with immediate effect until further notice, for traditional fishing craft, small fishing vessels fitted with outboard engines, and one-day fishing vessels operating in these coastal waters.

Fishermen operating in other areas are also advised to carefully assess prevailing wind and wave conditions before venturing out to sea and to do so only when conditions are safe. They are strongly urged to refrain from fishing whenever sea conditions become hazardous.

The Department of Fisheries further emphasizes that wearing life jackets is mandatory from the moment of departure until returning to shore. This remains a legal requirement under the Fisheries Act and must be strictly observed by all fishermen.

As the adverse weather conditions are expected to continue over the coming days, the Department kindly requests the entire fishing community to closely monitor official updates issued by the Department of Meteorology and the Department of Fisheries, and to act responsibly to safeguard their lives and property.
