The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources announces that 17 empty containers have fallen into the sea from a merchant ship approximately 17 nautical miles west of Colombo Port.

The incident occurred near Latitude 06°54′ North and Longitude 079°32′ East. Based on prevailing sea currents, there is a high possibility that these containers will drift towards the coastal waters from Beruwala to Puttalam via Negombo.

Therefore, all multi-day and small fishing vessels operating or travelling through these waters are advised to exercise extreme caution and remain highly vigilant.

If any of these floating containers are sighted, fishermen are kindly requested to immediately notify the Radio Communication Centre of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources or the nearest Fisheries Harbour officials.
