According to the strong wind risk weather forecast issued today (2026/08/09) by the Department of Meteorology, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources hereby issues this special notice to the entire fishing community regarding the prevailing weather conditions in the sea areas around the island.

According to the relevant forecast, wind speeds in the sea areas from Matara through Hambantota to Pottuvil may occasionally increase up to 70 km/h, and as a result, there is a high possibility that these sea areas will become rough or very rough. As this condition is extremely hazardous for fishing activities in coastal areas, small vessels engaged in one-day and coastal fishing activities departing from these areas are strongly advised not to venture out to sea for fishing activities.

Furthermore, fishing vessels departing for fishing activities from other areas where no hazardous conditions have been reported are also specifically advised not to engage in fishing activities within the designated hazardous sea zone from Matara to Pottuvil.

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources kindly requests all fishermen to remain constantly attentive to the prevailing weather conditions and the weather forecasts  that will be issued in the future, and to act responsibly by strictly adhering to safety instructions.
