The Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda stated that he would like to express appreciation on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government for the grant of 3 Million Dollars provided by Japan through the World Food and Agriculture Organization to develop the Freshwater Fishing Industry in Sri Lanka.

The Ministry of Fisheries submitted a memorandum to the Cabinet of Ministers on 18/03/2024 to establish a volunteer force called "Sea Guards" to monitor the forced encroachment of the Indian fishermen to the Northern waters.
In this regard, a discussion between the Minister of Fisheries and the representatives of Multi-Day vessel owners and the exporter's associations was held on 2024-03-18 at the Ministry of Fisheries.
