Government Will Never Support Illegal Activities – Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar
A purified freshwater ice production facility established for the Iranapalai Rural Fisheries Organization in Mullaitivu District with financial assistance from the Government of Japan was officially inaugurated and handed over to the local fishing community today.
The event was held under the patronage of Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar and was attended by ministry officials, local government representatives, fisheries sector stakeholders, and a large number of fishermen from the area.
The newly established facility is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of local fishermen to preserve and market their catch in a more efficient and hygienic manner, thereby strengthening their economic activities and improving livelihoods.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Chandrasekar emphasized the Government’s commitment to upholding law and order across the country.
“There were instances in the past where certain politicians were linked to unlawful activities. However, the National People's Power Government will not provide support or protection to any form of illegal activity. The rule of law must apply equally to all citizens,” he said.
The Minister further noted that the Government has implemented a series of measures to curb the widespread drug culture that had affected society, adding that considerable progress has already been achieved in this regard.
He also stated that the Government is fully aware of the challenges faced by fishing communities across the country, including those in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, and that a structured programme is being implemented to address these issues in a phased manner.
“Protecting the livelihoods of fishermen and modernizing the fisheries industry are among the key priorities of this Government. Long-standing issues cannot be resolved overnight, but we are committed to identifying and addressing them systematically and responsibly,” Minister Chandrasekar said.
The purified freshwater ice production facility is expected to provide substantial support to fishermen in Iranapalai and surrounding areas, while also contributing to increased productivity, improved fish preservation standards, and higher incomes within the fisheries sector.
