Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandraseker has instructed officials of the Narcotics Control Division to implement awareness programs to educate fishermen on how to avoid becoming entangled in the activities of drug traffickers.
A special discussion on this matter, chaired by the Minister, was held today (23.09.2025) at the Ministry with the participation of 25 district coordinators of the Fisheries Ministry.
Deputy Minister of Fisheries Rathna Gamaghe, Ministry Secretary P.K. Kolita Kamal Jinadasa, senior officials, and several Members of Parliament were also present.
During the meeting, the Narcotics Control Division explained in detail how fishermen are often exploited by drug traffickers. Following the briefing, the Minister instructed that immediate awareness programs be organized for fishermen. He also stated that the Navy would be informed of these measures.
In addition, the Chairman of the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) presented proposals to increase fish production in inland water bodies, for which the Minister assured that the necessary facilities would be provided.
The discussion also focused on issues faced by fishermen, including challenges in inland fisheries.
