The relocation of the existing small boat dock in the area is being successfully carried out under the program to promote the Arugam Bay Tourist Zone in the Ampara District.
This discussion, chaired by the Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Mr. Susantha Kahawatte, was attended by officials from the Sri Lanka Navy, the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resources Management, the Ampara District Secretariat, the Tourism Board under the Divisional Secretariat and other relevant government institutions. The fishing community engaged in fishing activities in the area and officials from the District Fisheries Office of the Ampara District also participated for this event.
The main objective of this is:
To develop the area as a coastal strip completely reserved for tourists through eliminating the obstacles to tourism activities caused by the mooring of small boats in the area, which is currently crowded with tourists. Accordingly, the existing fishing anchorage is expected to be moved to another suitable location and a new fishing anchorage with all the facilities will be established in a manner that will not cause any problems to the fishing community. It is expected that this tourist area will be developed to a great extent under this.
Facilities expected to be established at the new fishing anchorage:
It is planned to establish all the necessary basic facilities including net mending centers required for fishermen, places where the engines of the fishermen's motor vessels are kept, sanitary facilities, water facilities, security buildings required for safety, auction halls for fish sales and a fisheries inspectorate office.
