“We Are Building a Government That Provides Relief Not Just Through Words, but Through Action, Without Placing Additional Burdens on the People,” Says Deputy Minister Rathna Gamage.

The distribution of net gear valued at Rs. 1,265,270.00 under the relief program for the fishing community in the Colombo District affected by Cyclone Ditwah was held this morning (25) at the Ministry of Fisheries under the patronage of the Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Hon. Rathna Gamage.

Addressing the gathering while presenting high-quality net sets to 14 beneficiaries, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the government is committed to supporting the people and will not place additional burdens on them.

“When global fuel prices increase, the government absorbs the loss in order to protect our fishermen. The savings generated through the reduction of fuel quotas and privileges allocated to Members of Parliament and ministers will be redirected towards the welfare of the fishing community. The reason it took some time to address the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah was the government’s decision to provide the highest-quality nets and vessels through the North Sea and Cey-Nor institutions operating under our ministry, rather than supplying substandard equipment. To achieve our target of increasing fisheries export earnings to USD 600 million, it is essential that your livelihoods are strengthened and sustained,” the Deputy Minister stated.

The Deputy Minister also reminded the fishing community to play an active role in reducing marine pollution, noting that protecting the ocean and respecting nature is a shared responsibility.

Speaking at the event, Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Mr. Susantha Kahawatte, stated that relief assistance will be provided to all fishermen affected by the cyclone before the end of this year.

The event was attended by several officials, including Chairman of the Cey-Nor Foundation, Mr. Wasantha Mannapperuma, as well as fishermen representing the Colombo District.
