Permission Granted to Resume Fishing Activities from Puttalam to Hambantota: Sea Area from Hambantota to Pottuvil still Remains at Risk Level - Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
According to the warning weather bulletin on strong winds issued by the Department of Meteorology at 10.00 a.m. today (05), the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has issued a further notice regarding the prevailing weather conditions in the sea areas around the island.
According to the notice, the strong wind conditions that prevailed in the sea areas from Puttalam through Colombo and Galle to Hambantota have now eased to some extent. Accordingly, the Fisheries Department informs that carrying out fishing activities in those sea areas are suitable, following the necessary safety measures.
However, as the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil continue to remain unsuitable for coastal fishing activities, fishermen are hereby advised to refrain from setting out for fishing activities from those areas until further notice.
As wind speeds in the other sea areas around the island may increase again at any time due to the influence of the southwest monsoon, the Department emphasizes that all fishermen engaged in fishing activities must wear life jackets.
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources requests the entire fishing community to remain constantly attentive to future notices issued regarding the prevailing weather conditions and to strictly follow all safety instructions.
