The Ministry of Fisheries has planned to hold the celebration of the International Fisheries Day which falls on November 21 in Jaffna.
Last year this celebration was held in Kalutara district and the State Minister of Fisheries Piyal Nishantha has suggested that it is better to hold it this time in Jaffna. Accordingly, the Ministry of Fisheries has planned a several other programs including a mobile service to solve the fisheries problems until November 15. Among them, the Aquaculture Development Authority has arranged a program to provide financial support to those engaged in aquaculture and NARA has arranged to hold several seminars to raise awareness about the marine research and aquatic research conducted by them.
State Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Piyal Nishantha said that the Fishery Harbor Corporation has decided to hold a medical clinic for the fishermen, a softball cricket tournament among the workers of the fishery harbors and a series of seminars on savings for the women fishermen.
This decision was taken at the discussion held on 18.09.2023 in the Ministry of Fisheries under the chairmanship of, State Minister of Fisheries Mr. Piyal Nishantha. Ms. Indu Ratnayake in her comments said that the last International Fisheries Day was held very successfully in Beruwala and based on the experience gained there, we will arrange to hold this celebration very successfully. She also said that this ceremony should be held according to the cultural traditions of the Northern Province and that the final official ceremony is planned to be held in the Jaffna Hindu Cultural Center under the patronage of the President and the Prime Minister.
