
The primary objective of the visit was to repair and return outrigger fishing boats that were partially damaged by the cyclone through the Cey-Nor Foundation, and to distribute new boats and nets with the support of the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA). At the event, held at the Old District Secretariat in Batticaloa, aid valued at Rs. 26.9 million was distributed among 16 fishing societies.
A total of 72 outrigger boats and 1,318 net sets were provided to fishermen. In addition, the Fisheries Department, through the Cey-Nor Foundation, supplied two new boats and repaired and returned 14 partially damaged vessels.
In parallel with the main program, the Minister also conducted visits to several locations connected to the fishing industry in the Batticaloa District, where he directly assessed the challenges faced by the fishing community.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekhar highlighted the people-centered political vision of the National People’s Power government. “We came to power to establish a new political culture. Our President is committed to serving the people day and night. In times of disaster, it is the responsibility of the government to extend relief to all, regardless of party affiliation, ethnicity, caste, or religion. For many years, the country was governed by a privileged few. Today, however, a leader who understands the hardships of the people has risen to the presidency,” he stated. He further emphasized the need to modernize the fishing industry with a focus on technology and export-oriented development.
During the visit, the Minister also held a special discussion with officials of the Batticaloa District Fisheries Department, urging them to act with greater responsibility in effectively implementing government policies at the grassroots level.
Batticaloa District Parliamentarian Kandasamy Prabhu, District Secretary J.S. Arulraj, Chairman of the Cey-Nor Foundation Ajitha Edirisinghe, along with government officials and representatives of fisheries associations, were present at the event.
