Japan Support for Modernizing Sri Lanka’s Fisheries Sector

The Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, His Excellency ISOMATA Akio, has reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the modernization of Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector through the introduction of advanced technology and innovative development projects.

The assurance was given during a special meeting held at the Ambassador’s official residence following an invitation extended to the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekar.

During the meeting, both parties engaged in cordial discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation between Sri Lanka and Japan, particularly in the fisheries and marine resources sectors. A dinner was also hosted by the Ambassador in honour of the Minister.

Several important matters were discussed during the discussions, including the financial assistance programmes provided by the Government of Japan to Sri Lanka and possible avenues to further expand and strengthen such cooperation.

Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar briefed the Ambassador on the future development plans of the Ministry of Fisheries and outlined strategies for the sustainable and efficient utilization of Sri Lanka’s marine resources. Discussions also focused on the introduction of Japan’s advanced fisheries technologies and innovative systems to enhance productivity and modernization within Sri Lanka’s fisheries industry.

Responding to the Minister’s presentation, Ambassador ISOMATA Akio stated that the Government of Japan remains fully prepared to extend its support towards the modernization efforts of Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector and to collaborate in implementing new innovation-driven projects.

The meeting further underscored the longstanding friendship and strong bilateral relations shared between Sri Lanka and Japan.

Also present at the occasion were the Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries, Dr. B.K. Koliita Kamal Jinadasa, the Minister’s Private Secretary, Sritharan Poologarajah, and the Minister’s Coordinating Secretary, Kesan Madushanka.
