The current government is fully committed to safeguarding the religious freedom and cultural rights of the Muslim community in Sri Lanka, says Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar.

The Minister made this statement in a message extending his greetings to Muslims in Sri Lanka and around the world on the occasion of Eid al-Adha (Hajj).

In his message, the Minister noted that Eid al-Adha is not merely a religious celebration but a sacred occasion that reflects the noble human values of sacrifice, equality, compassion, and concern for others. He further stated that Sri Lanka is presently undergoing a new political and social transformation, with the government taking decisive steps to overcome past challenges and establish a political culture founded on equality, justice, and inclusivity for all citizens.

The official message further states:

“In this new journey, the contribution of our Muslim brothers and sisters to the economic and social development of the country is immense. In particular, their dedication and contribution to the fisheries and maritime economic sectors stand as a major pillar supporting the nation’s progress and development.”

Emphasizing that unity beyond ethnic, religious, and linguistic differences is the true strength of a nation, the Minister of Fisheries stated that the government is taking all necessary measures to further strengthen national harmony in Sri Lanka, a country enriched by its multi-ethnic and multicultural identity.

Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar further affirmed that the government firmly believes the sovereignty, stability, and peace of the country can only be ensured when the rights of minority communities are protected. He added that the Muslim community has been assured of a safe and secure environment within the framework of the law, enabling them to practice their religion and pursue their livelihoods freely, without fear, discrimination, or uncertainty.
