Ornamental fish production to begin in the Northern and Eastern provinces

Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Hon. Ramalingam Chandraseker, held discussions on initiating and strengthening the ornamental fish production industry in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

The talks focused on assessing the potential, identifying challenges, and exploring future development prospects in the sector.

The Minister visited the Haritha Ornamental Fish Production Farm in Padukka Colombo, where he observed the ongoing production processes and engaged directly with ornamental fish producers, industry experts, and entrepreneurs.

Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries, Dr. B.K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, along with several industry stakeholders, participated in the event.

Minister Chandraseker emphasized that the ornamental fish industry is an innovative and promising sector capable of making a significant contribution to the national economy. He noted that with the increasing global demand for ornamental fish, Sri Lanka has the potential to become a key player in the international market.

During the discussions, the Minister interacted with producers to review existing challenges in production and export, the need for technological advancements, quality assurance, and better access to international markets.

He further pointed out that the Northern and Eastern Provinces possess abundant natural and aquatic resources, making them ideal regions for establishing ornamental fish farms. The Minister added that the government is committed to extending the necessary support, including training programs and development initiatives, to promote this industry in those areas.

The meeting also included preliminary discussions aimed at formulating a comprehensive national action plan to enhance the ornamental fish production and export industry across Sri Lanka.
