State Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Piyal Nishantha Silva says prices of fishing gear which increased by several fold recently will come down by some degree in the next few months.
State Minister of Fisheries said this on 13th March 2023 in Matara at the opening of the latest Branch of the Mega Stores modern market network being established by Ceylon Fisheries Corporation throughout the island with the intention of providing a better service to the customer.
“We know that fishermen are highly worried about the high prices of fishing gear. prices of fishing gear are determined by the Importing Companies, however, with the strengthening of the rupee, the benefit in importing the fishing gear should go directly to the fisherman. We as the Ministry of Fisheries will mediate in this matter. A reduction in the prices of fishing gear can come about in the future.”
State Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Piyal Nishantha Silva also expressed views about the Mega Stores modern market network being established by Ceylon Fisheries Corporation.
Ceylon Fisheries Corporation has allowed the facility for consumers to purchase fish products including dried fish and Maldive fish in addition to good quality nutritious fish varieties appropriate for consumption through the Mega Stores outlet which was established in Matara. The purpose of opening this Mega Stores outlet network is providing fish products to customers at low prices during the time of crisis in fulfillment of the nutrition requirements of the country. More such outlets in main cities throughout the country are scheduled to be opened in the future.
Present on this occasion were the Political Authority of the area including Parliamentarian and Matara District Coordination Committee Chairman Mr.Nipuna Ranavaka, former Southern Provincial Councilor and Southern Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authority Chairman Mr. Anura Gunaratne, Matara Pradesheeya Sabha Chairman Hon. Wimal Priyajanaka and officials including Ceylon Fisheries Corporation Chairman Mr. Chaturanga Udawaththa.
