A special discussion aimed at resolving the issues faced by the country’s ornamental fish production and export sector, while also exploring ways to further develop the industry, was held yesterday (18) at the Ministry premises under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ratna Gamage.

Leading ornamental fish producers and exporters representing various areas of the island participated in the meeting. During the discussion, it was decided to accelerate the implementation of the action plan introduced through the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) for the advancement of the sector.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Minister emphasized that a new transparent import system would be introduced to prevent the collapse of the industry caused by previous import restrictions. Under the proposed system, industrialists will be given the opportunity to legally import fish species according to business requirements. The Minister further stated that businessmen would also be allowed to present their views before an expert committee when revising the list of fish species prohibited from being imported into the country.

Attention was also drawn to providing relief for small-scale ornamental fish producers who were severely affected by Cyclone “Ditwah.” Accordingly, the Deputy Minister announced that arrangements have been made to provide financial assistance of Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 50,000, respectively, depending on the extent of losses incurred. This support is expected to bring significant relief to farmers who are currently struggling even to purchase fish feed.

It was further agreed to continuously monitor the industry and hold direct discussions with the ornamental fish farmers every two to three months in order to address their concerns effectively.

Among those who participated in the event were NAQDA Chairman, Mr. Kithsiri Dharmapriya, the Deputy Minister’s Private Secretary, Mr. H.S. Hathurasinghe, and Coordinating Secretary, Ms.W.A.J. Malkumari.
