
A special program to distribute life jackets and other safety equipment, organized under the provisions of the Southern Provincial Fisheries Ministry with the aim of increasing the safety and professional efficiency of the fishing community in the Hikkaduwa area, was held on May 15th at the Hikkaduwa Divisional Secretariat under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ratna Gamage.
The Deputy Minister, who spoke at the event, emphasized that ensuring the life safety of the fishing community, which makes a significant contribution to the national economy of the country, is a prime responsibility of the government. He further stated that the provision of these equipment will go a long way in reducing accidents during sea voyages and creating a safer professional environment.
It is expected that this program will strengthen the livelihood of the fishing community and enhance their welfare. This will provide fishermen with an opportunity to engage in their work by following proper safety procedures, especially in the face of the prevailing adverse weather conditions.
The event was attended by the Chairman (Mayor) of the Hikkaduwa Municipal Council, Mr. Yasaswin Godakanda, members of the Hikkaduwa Municipal Council, government officials and a large number of fishermen in the area.
