In line with the program to provide Rs. 26.9 million in relief to the Batticaloa fishing community affected by Cyclone “Ditwa,” the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Hon. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, on the 11th, conducted a special inspection tour of the Valachchenai Fishery Harbour.

The Minister stated that the government has allocated Rs. 1,300 million for the comprehensive development of the harbour, a key hub of the fishing industry in the Eastern Province. As part of the initial phase, Rs. 400 million has already been earmarked for essential infrastructure improvements and the accelerated construction of harbour facilities.

During the visit, the Minister inspected the harbour premises and held extensive discussions with officials and members of the fishing community regarding current challenges and future development plans.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar said:
“Ensuring the safety and economic stability of the fishing community remains a top priority of our government. We are committed to modernizing the fishing industry and continuously strengthening port infrastructure. I assure you that this long-awaited development of the Valachchenai Fishery  Harbour will be implemented swiftly, bringing sustainable progress and significantly improving the livelihoods of the local fishing community.”
