The Kurunegala District Fisheries Coordination Committee meeting was held successfully yesterday (11) under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Hon. Rathna Gamage.
Addressing the meeting, Deputy Minister Rathna Gamage highlighted that the majority of issues identified during the previous committee session have now been successfully resolved through the collective efforts of the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA), National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), District and Divisional Secretaries, and fisheries organizations. He noted that the remaining concerns could also be addressed promptly, while commending the strong coordination among all relevant institutions.
Fishermen’s representatives stated that, due to the collaborative efforts of the police, government bodies, and fisheries associations in curbing illegal fishing practices, such activities have now been completely eliminated in all tanks across Kurunegala, with the exception of one location.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Hon. Namal Karunaratne, and Kurunegala District Parliamentarian, Ms. Geetha Herath, also attended the occasion. The event was further attended by the Secretary of the North Western Province, Chairman of the Panduwasnuwara Pradeshiya Sabha Mr. Sanjeewa Karunasagara, along with officials from the Fisheries Corporation and the Cey-Nor Institute.
