"Provide a service that makes the people who come to the fishing port leave with a smiling face" - Deputy Minister Ratna Gamage

Keeping the trust placed by the people in the vision of “A Rich country – a Beautiful life,” Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean  Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar and Deputy Minister Ratna Gamage instructed officials to ensure the efficient utilization of the substantial funds allocated in this year’s budget for the development of fishery harbour infrastructure.

These views were expressed during the  progress review meeting 2026 of the Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation, held yesterday (March 4) at the Corporation premises.

Addressing the gathering, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean  Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar stated that the government is in power with the trust and mandate of the people, and therefore all officials must be fully committed to providing uninterrupted and quality services to the public. Highlighting that a significant allocation has been made in the 2026 budget to develop infrastructure under the Fishery Harbours Corporation, the Minister emphasized the need for officials to utilize those funds with maximum efficiency and ensure that all planned projects are completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean  Resources Ratna Gamage noted that the allocations present a valuable opportunity to revive fishery  harbours that have experienced setbacks in the past. He stressed the importance of maintaining key infrastructure such as jetties, internal road systems, and overall cleanliness, particularly in busy harbours like Galle, which experience heavy congestion.

“We must create an environment where fishermen and all those who visit fishery  harbours for services can arrive with a smile, have their needs attended to efficiently, and leave with satisfaction. The dedication of all officials to maintain clean, orderly and well-managed harbour systems by effectively utilizing the allocated provisions is essential,” the Deputy Minister further stated.

The discussion was attended by Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean  Resources Dr. B. K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, Chairman of the Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation Limited Mr. B. A. P. Kapila Bamunuarachchi, and senior management officials of the Corporation.
