A meeting was held between the Minister of Fisheries, Douglas Devananda and French Ambassador, Jean Francois Pactet at the Fisheries Ministry.
During the discussion of the new Fisheries Bill that the Ministry of Fisheries expects to present, the Ministry informed the Ambassador that the bill will be drafted in accordance with international fisheries regulations and will guide the nation's fishermen toward a high-quality fishing sector.
The minister also discussed with the French ambassador about the development of several major fishing ports in the country. In particular, the minister requested the ambassador to give maximum support from the French government to empower the fishermen in this country. A group of officials including the secretary of the Ministry, Ms. Nayana Kumari Somaratne and Director General of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Mr.Susantha Kahawatta participated in this event.
