According to the special weather forecast issued by the Department of Meteorology at 10:30 a.m. today (02), the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has warned that engaging in fishing activities will be extremely risky over the next 24 hours, as sea conditions around the island are expected to be very rough.

The Department stated that wind speeds could increase to 50–60 kilometres per hour at times in sea areas extending from Mullaitivu to Kankesanthurai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. As a result, these sea areas will be highly dangerous for fishing operations.

In this regard, the Director General of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Mr. Susantha Kahawatte, emphasized the following:

"I kindly urge all fishermen to refrain from engaging in fishing activities in the above-mentioned sea areas during the next 24 hours. Fishing vessels currently operating in these areas should return to shore safely as soon as possible. I would also like to remind all fishermen that wearing life jackets is mandatory while carrying out any fishing activity."

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources further advises the entire fishing community to remain vigilant regarding the prevailing adverse weather conditions and to strictly follow the instructions issued by the relevant authorities in order to safeguard lives and property.
