Two Projects Worth Over Rs. 5 Billion (US$16.6 Million) from South Korea to Strengthen Sri Lanka\u2019s Blue Economy \u2013 Discussions Successfully Concluded<\/h6>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A special discussion on two major projects proposed to be implemented using modern technology to protect Sri Lanka\u2019s marine resources and strengthen coastal disaster management was held at the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources on the 21st. The meeting was chaired by Dr. B. K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, Secretary to the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources.<\/p>

The projects, proposed with the support of the South Korean Government, are aimed at advancing Sri Lanka\u2019s Blue Economy Vision 2030<\/strong> and increasing the contribution of the marine sector to the country\u2019s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 6%.<\/p>

The discussions focused primarily on two key projects:<\/p>

  1. Establishment of a Coastal Disaster Prediction and Response Center (PCP):<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>

    This centre will be established to enable the early detection of coastal disasters and ensure rapid response through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The project, valued at US$6.6 million (over Rs. 2 billion), is scheduled to be implemented over a period of four years in collaboration with the Department of Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resources Management.<\/p>

    1. Establishment of a Marine Litter Management System (PCP):<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>

      This project will utilize high-definition satellite technology and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) to monitor and control plastic and chemical waste, which poses a growing threat to the marine environment. With an investment of US$10 million (over Rs. 3 billion), the project is expected to be implemented over five years in collaboration with the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA).<\/p>

      Speaking at the discussion, Dr. B. K. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, Secretary to the Ministry, emphasized that the transfer of advanced technology through these projects will play a vital role in strengthening the coastal economy, where nearly 25% of the country’s population resides. He also highlighted the importance of minimizing the adverse impacts of marine debris on the tourism and fisheries sectors.<\/p>

      Representing South Korea at the event were Dr. Kwang-Soon Park, Director of the Korea Coastal Management Association (KCMA); Hongkyu Kwak, Vice President of the Southwest Asia Branch of the Peaceful Integration Advisory Council; and Hyun Yeong Kim, Chief Executive Officer of Institute of Mirae Saeum.<\/p>
