A special programme to provide relief to fishermen in the Chilaw district was held today (March 23, 2026) at the Chilaw Fishery Harbour, under the government\u2019s extensive relief package of Rs. 865.79 million aimed at uplifting the fishing community impacted by Cyclone \u2018Ditwa\u2019, which struck in November 2025.<\/p>\n\n

The ceremony, held under the patronage of Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar, marked the symbolic distribution of newly manufactured boats by Cey-Nor Foundation Limited to replace 11 vessels that were completely destroyed by the storm. In addition, the Minister handed over 14 repaired boats along with new fishing gear to affected fishermen.<\/p>\n\n

Addressing the gathering, the Minister emphasized that while the country continues to recover from the devastation caused by Cyclone \u2018Ditwa\u2019, the ongoing global crisis has had an impact comparable to that of a world war. \u201cDespite these challenges, we will not abandon our people. Although some seek political advantage through criticism, we have reformed the old, corrupt political culture. We have significantly reduced excessive privileges, allowances, and salaries previously enjoyed by ministers, setting an example of responsible governance. The savings from these measures are being redirected towards public welfare. Even in the face of disaster and global hardships, we remain committed to supporting our people,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n

Mr. Ajith Gihan, Member of Parliament for Puttalam, stated that as part of the relief initiative, measures had also been introduced to provide fishermen with loans of up to Rs. 25 million at a concessionary interest rate of 3%.<\/p>\n\n

Director General of Fisheries Susantha Kahawatte stated that the distribution of vessels and equipment will be carried out transparently through government institutions such as Cey-Nor Foundation Limited and North Sea Limited, utilizing the Rs. 865 million allocation provided by the Treasury.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
