\u201cFulfilling the Cardinal\u2019s request, Negombo Lagoon is being protected; The artists\u2019 paradise is being turned into a tourist attraction again – Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar\u201d<\/p>\n\n

With the aim of conserving the Negombo Lagoon \u2014 a vital resource for both the fishing industry and the tourism sector \u2014 and enhancing its natural beauty, construction of a new jetty and boat launching yard at a cost of Rs. 318.49 million was inaugurated today (17) under the patronage of the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean \u00a0Resources, Mr. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, and Deputy Minister Ratna Gamage.<\/p>\n\n

Addressing the gathering, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar said that the project was initiated in response to a request made two months ago by the ArchBishop of Colombo,His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith. He noted that Negombo Lagoon, long regarded as a haven for artists and writers, had suffered environmental degradation due to the irregular mooring of boats.\u201cWith the construction of this new jetty, boats will be properly moored, restoring order and preserving the lagoon\u2019s scenic beauty. This will greatly benefit both the fishing community and the tourism industry,\u201d the Minister stated.<\/p>\n\n

He further emphasized that the government is committed to fostering a new political culture focused on public service, adding that privileges enjoyed by MPs and ministers would be reduced and the savings would be \u00a0redirected toward national development.<\/p>\n\n

Deputy Minister Ratna Gamage, speaking at the event, emphasized the persistent environmental issues affecting the lagoon over the years.\u201cThe Negombo Lagoon has been subjected to pollution from industrial waste, chemicals and other discharges. We have previously proposed establishing a Lagoon Development Authority to better regulate and protect this vital ecosystem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n

He also pointed to improvements in the fisheries sector, noting that fish and fish product imports in 2025 had decreased by 13% compared to 2024, while canned fish imports were reduced by 97.5%. Additionally, fisheries export earnings have increased by $300 million, reflecting stronger economic management and sectoral growth.<\/p>\n\n

The project, implemented with consultancy support from the University of Moratuwa, is scheduled for completion within 12 months.<\/p>\n\n

Member of Parliament, Stephanie Fernando, Negombo Mayor Attorney-at-Law Robert Heenkenda, Secretary ti the Ministry , Dr. B. K. Mr. Kolitha Kamal Jinadasa, Divisional Secretary, Ms. Rasika Mallawarachchi, along with government officials and members of the fishing community, were also present at the ceremony.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
