The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
Development has taken preliminary
measures to make relevant notifications to the Indian authorities in order to
get released the fishermen onboard the vessel Kavisha Putha 03 arrested
by the Indian Coast Guard on Indian maritime boundaries.
Hon Minister has collected relevant data from the Vessel Monitoring System and discussed the matter with
the Secretary to the Ministry and Director General of the Department.
According VMS data, the arrested fishing vessel had not fished on Indian
maritime boundaries. They have been arrested 150 km away from the South of
India while returning from deep sea fishing. However, they have not engaged in
fishing within the Indian maritime boundaries.
Thus, the Minister has given directives to prepare a detail report
inserting these data and submit it to Indian authorities and the Indian High
Commissioner in Sri Lanka.
The Fisheries Ministry has already requested the Indian authorities to
release the said fishermen and the joint operation committee of the India- Sri Lanka
Fishermen Issue to be held on 07th April will further be informed in
this regard. Thus, the Ministry expects that Sri Lankan fishers will soon be
released from the Indian custody.
