The Ministry has targeted to establish 250 CFC fish sales outlets around the country by end 2013. Under this programmethe 105th Outlet opened at Dodangoda in Kaluthara District.

4 th Session of the Indu-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group (JWG) on fisheries met in Colombo.

4 th Session of the Indo-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group (JWG) on fisheries successfully concluded on 14 January 2012. The Indian delegation was led by Mr. Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs and Sri Lanka by Mrs. Kshenuka Senevirathne, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs.

The two countries agreed to enhance cooperation to continue fishing activities in a safe and sustainable manner. The joint statement issued on the session discussed measures to faster repatriation of fishermen who get stranded in waters of two countries. The JWG agreed to meet every six months to resolve issues pertaining to fisheries.

The Indian delegation met Hon. Minister and the Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development before the official meeting on 13 January at the Ministry.
Asian Regional Ministerial Meeting on "Aquaculture for Food Security, Nutrition and Economic Development" held...  

Asia Regional Ministerial Meeting on “Aquaculture for Food Security, Nutrition and Economic Development” was held on 28 th and 29 th July 2011 at the Hilton hotel, Colombo in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and Network of Aquaculture Centers in Asia-Pacific (NACA). Around ninety representatives from seventeen countries including 13 Ministers/Deputy Ministers in charge of the fisheries industry participated. The meeting was inaugurated by His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa the President of Sri Lanka on the 28 th July 2011 and delivered the keynote address.

Pre - Ministerial meeting was held on 26 th July 2011 at the Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo.

The objective of the meeting was to build consensus on common strategies for improving contributions for Asian aquaculture for regional food security, nutrition and economic development and global food fish production and for regional cooperation. ...>pictures<...

Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) met in Sri Lanka
Fifteenth Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) was held at Galle Face Hotel, Colombo from 18-22 March 2011, preceded by the 8 th Session of the Compliance Committee . The Meeting held in Colombo for the first time on the invitation of Hon. Rajitha Senaratne, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development (MFARD), was the highest attended IOTC meeting ever, enjoying the participation of 25 countries and nearly 250 delegates and observers from all over the world. The 15 th Session of IOTC was chaired by Mr. Randolph Payet with Mr. Alejandro Anganuzzi as the Secretary General. The five-day Meeting inaugurated by Hon. Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development, was graced by the presence of Hon. (Prof.) G. L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs and the Hon. Susantha Punchinileme, Deputy Minister, MFARD. Welcome address was delivered by Dr. Damitha de Zoysa, Secretary, MFARD.

The State -of-the-art Central Fish Market Complex declared open on 26 March 2011. The market complex is located at a convenient place with adequate parking facilities for handling and wholesale and retail distribution of fish in accordance with modern standards and hygienic requirements. The central market consists 148 wholesale outlets and 128 retail outlets and capacity to handle 500 Mt fish per day which manages 30% of the market.
